The Philippines is an archipelago with more than 7,000 islands and islets in the Western Pacific Ocean. It takes the name of King Philip II of Spain, the ruler during the Spanish colonization of the islands in the 16th century. Despite this, the country’s official language is not Spanish, but English and Filipino.

Until 2016, the country was held to have 7,107 islands when the authorities announced the discovery of more than 500 islands. The large islands fall into three groups:

Luzon: Located in the North and West, it is the largest island and consists of Luzon, Mindoro and Palawan. It is also where it sits the capital Manila, and the most populous city, Quezon City.

Visayas: Located in the center, it consists of Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Masbate, Negros, Panay, and Samar.

Mindanao: It is the second largest island and located in the South of the country.

Only about 3,000 islands have names and some 350 have areas of 2.6 square kilometers. That is why island hopping is one of the top things to do when traveling to the Philippines. With your travel plans in hand, you can take a look at the Philippines Airlines online booking, choose a base island and plan for international and domestic flights so you can travel around the area you are staying in.

Here in this text we are gonna tell you six places you might wanna visit to explore marine life and have some exotic adventure in the Philippines.

From the biggest to the smallest (or nameless), there are plenty of islands if you are looking for an exciting experience. Caves, underwater rivers, snorkeling, and shipwreck diving, you choose.

Kayangan Lake: This stunning natural resource is on the island of Coron and it offers a full aquatic experience. You can visit its coral garden, go cliff diving or shipwreck diving and the water is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Sangat Island: It has some of the best diving sites in the world with a great variety of shipwrecks for you to explore in both deep and shallow waters. Some wrecks are dated from the Second World War and have become the home for many fish species. It is a great place to spot underwater wildlife while experiencing some live history before your eyes.

Alona Beach: It sits on Bohol Island, a relatively primitive island which is not crowded by tourists. This is a great place for swimming, snorkeling and diving along the reef while having the amazing experience of spotting dolphins and whales. Bonus: You should visit the Chocolate Hills natural wonder, a group of unusually shaped hills located in the middle of the island that just look like chocolate truffles rising to the sky.

Pearl Farm Beach: Located on Samal Island, it is famous for its pink hue sand and deep blue water. There you can enjoy water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and flyboarding. And when you are done you might just sit on the sand and relax, feeling a nice tropical breeze.

Honda Bay: It sits in Puerto Princesa on Palawan Island and it is a popular destination for snorkeling, swimming and having a great time jet skiing and wakeboarding. While there you can take island hopping tours and get to know more beaches around the area.

Underground River: Still in Puerto Princesa, an hour and a half car trip from Honda Bay, you can have a unique experience on the Underground River inside the Subterranean River National Park. You’ll have the chance to go through a river that runs below ground with an intricate cave system surrounded by limestone cliffs.

Best season to visit the Philippines

The weather is an important aspect to consider before checking the Philippine Airlines online booking. If you are looking for outdoor experiences and more adventurous tours, the best time to visit the country is the dry season, which is from November to April.

During this time of the year, there is less rainfall, so you can enjoy the beach days. Also,  nice weather lowers the chances of flight delays and makes it easier to access remote and smaller islands. While the weather is cooler during December, January and February, the heat starts kicking in during March and the high temperatures and humidity get more intense in April and May.
